The Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art (Suzhou MoCA), which is scheduled to officially commence operation on Aug 30, was opened to media on Aug 24. Participants had the chance to get an early look at this highly anticipated new cultural landmark in Suzhou.

The tour began with the “Picasso and the World of His Influence”, one of the opening exhibitions of the museum. The complete set of 100 pieces of Picasso’s renowned Vollard Suite is on display, alongside over 30 works by 21 artists/groups from nine countries, including prints, oil paintings, ink paintings, sculptures, and installations.

In Hall 8, the “Gen: A Journey Through Art’s Transcendence” exhibition is structured around four timelines: 6,000 years of the Caoxieshan Site, 3,000 years of Wu-Yue culture, 600 years of the Wu Painting School, and 30 years of development of SIP. It guides visitors to experience local culture.

The “Codes & Canopies: Art Beyond the Age of Algorithms” exhibition boasts works by internationally acclaimed artists from 11 countries, covering AI art, bio-art, virtual art, and space art. It moves beyond mere technological spectacle to refocus on the people, life, ecology, and interdependent relationships.

Outside the exhibition halls, a bus adorned with Picasso elements awaits. For one month after the opening, the bus will run on two routes through SIP and Suzhou’s old town, weaving a multi-dimensional artistic tapestry against the backdrop of the city’s streetscape.

Moreover, a cabin of the “Suzhou Eye” Ferris wheel near the museum is decorated to highlight cubism, transforming the Ferris wheel ride into a mini, mobile art experience.

The immersive experience extends to the art restaurant and museum shop. The restaurant features large floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of Jinji Lake and its surroundings, making dining an extension of the exhibition experience.

The museum shop embodies the museum’s aesthetic vision, with exclusive cultural products for the opening art season already available on shelves.
